Talk about timing...
God really has a way of showing you the WAY. Just when I thought I was over the incident that prompted my xanga posting (now blogspot), I happen to tune in on Studio 23's Y Speak and they were talking about the topic that dealt a big blow to my "fragile" e.q.--What is beauty?
The most cliche (I would like to think the most true) answer to this question would really have to be that it is in the eye of the beholder. While I agree with such statement whole heartedly, it still doesn't really answer the question fully. It just scratches the surf and doesn't delve deeper into the other question that are appurtenant (?) to the first. I think if one is to ask the question again, it should be restated to what is the beauty standard?
Why that restatement? Well, for starter, while one may rally behind the the cliche answer that it is in the eye of the beholder, the beholder cant deny that he has standards or guidelines that he uses say that the person is beautiful or not. And these standards are in turn influenced by the society in which the person belongs to or lives in. Even time dictates what beauty is. In the Renaissance, they favored the "voluptuous" women. In the 80's, morena's were unheard of in the fashion industry. They were just "too" dark for the lens man's taste. Then came the 90's that saw the rise of the earthy look which propelled the careers of Naomi and Tyra. Now, after the advent of Chinovelas and Korenovelas, its the chinky eyes that's selling like hotcakes.
Beauty changes as the beholder changes.
So yes, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder but the statement shouldn't end there. It should continue on to say that it is in the eye of the beholder, influenced by his temporality; so as just to make things clear!
